Crunchy Toast
I have had a really bad habit for years, basically because I'm not a morning person at all. I tend to be a night owl just like my dad was, my system starts to wake up at 19.00 in the evening instead of 07.00 in the morning. Countless nights I ended up working on [web design/Flash] projects and not being able to stop, driven by a perfectionist nature and eager to learn the ropes whenever it was software related or web design related... Long nights of spending time on configuring a script, adjusting it so it would work and do what I wanted it to do.
Or like the other day when my ISP decided to upgrade their Linux servers and PHP over the weekend and my blog stopped working the next day. I had no front-end blog and no back-end user interface. Reading into the problem, I found an excellent article about installing MT 4.0 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, which gave me a clue to what to look for in solving the problem. It turned out to be a security breach, one that I've created myself installing MT 4.0 the same way I've installed all the previous version. Permissions that used to be fine before were no longer working with the latest Linux version and causing problems so I had to change folders around and check permission on cgi scripts etc.
My ISP couldn't solve my problem, because they don't have Movable Type know-how so I was forced to solve it myself staying up half the night reading into things and running installation tests, even software upgrades. But I fixed it and I so swear by my own elimination theory based on trial and error because no matter how bad, I always seem to solve the problem: software-wise that is... I'm rather impatient and unlucky in solving problems in my personal life at times but that is just an extremely slow beta version of my elimination theory which I'm still debugging *hehe*...
So because I'm not a morning person I try to stay in bed as long as I possibly can. [I've exaggerated in the past but admitting that on here is still a bit embarrassing so I'd better not go into details for now, perhaps in a few years when I'm old enough to start thinking of writing an autobiography because the words 'shame and shy' are no longer part of my vocabulary...] And because I'm stretching out the process of getting up, to such an extend that I end up being in a rush, I have no time to eat because I literally have about ten minutes to get to work. So I skip breakfast... Yes bad... I know... Very bad indeed!
But hold your horses: I was about to say that I've changed my ways slightly ever since I ended up in hospital... After years of eating hardly any bread, I now have a 'typical English way' of celebrating my morning matters, by having two slices of the finest crunchy and crispy toast that I can manage to fix, during my morning half-awake-very-much-resting state. Since I do not like soggy or soft toast it is still quite a challenge because it takes three times three long minutes of toasting the bread and letting it cool off before it gets to the crunchy phase which basically means that these days I cannot allow myself to linger anymore, only over the weekend.
And guess what I did today... Wrong...
I got up at 07.00 *hehe*

So is that how it looks the third time 'round?
I'll need to remember ;-)
I bet your toaster is much nicer. That one looks like my mailbox!
But who am I to say? My toaster is a 60's model made in the 80's. You know, when all the style of the 50's was rejected. So I've a plain chrome box. It gets the job done, but that's about it. A real $9.95 special. Hey! Give me a break. I didn't buy it. It was left behind by a roommate and was practically new.
Hmm. . . perfectionist? Shy? Sorry, caught my attention. ;-)
But so did "celebrating my morning matters" as I continue to learn of celebrating even the tiniest of my matters.
Perhaps I should take that chrome box out later and let it do its thing. . . 3 times of course.
(btw: its still in its original box. . . that's how seldom it has been used)
Same here, I reach high efficiency at around 9:00 PM peaking at around 1 but had to adapt to the rest of society and sleep in decent times to wake up in decent times. Adaptation.
Regarding breakfast, I really miss that early breakfast with fresh coffee and seeing the early sunrise from Mellieha.
It is so difficult for me to wake up early. I am also in a rush to go to the office in the morning and I don't have time for breakfast at home so I fix something for me at work :) I have a box with cereal like almost everybody else at work, and also bread because I love toasts (we have a toaster at work), we have hot chocolate, coffee and tea (office policy too ;) and sometimes I take a quick break to buy some fruits in the supermarket opposite to the office :)
I think having breakfast is very important and I never skip it or else I feel all weak. I feel half asleep until about 9 or 10 because I get up at 7 am :) Anyway, those are some ideas for breakfast :)
Nice toaster by the way ;)
Have a great week Tess!
Jim: yes, that's how it's supposed to look, golden toast ;) This toaster is way to modern to me and meant to take care of bread like a French Baguette or a Greek Pita. I have a 'modern' version of an old chrome one. Hopefully my mum will decide one day to get rid of hers which is the same old chrome model but an original 50's ;)
Nothing wrong with the words 'perfectionist and shy' :p
I think you should hold on to your semi brand new chrome gadget and give it a try... you might get addicted like me or you could at least start practise using it? ;)
Reuben: it's bad to have a body clock like that isn't it? I always try to rest on time but I just can't seem to fall asleep before midnight. A few times I did and I ended up being wide awake at 03.00 in the morning getting all frustrated because I couldn't fall asleep again till about 08.00 when I would have to get up and get ready for work... no fun :(
Adaptation: yes... I wish I didn't have to ;)
What is keeping you from having an early breakfast every now and then? :)
Wen: sounds like you are as 'bad' as I am in the morning *LOL* Jeez you've got a great office policy! And a toaster at work??? Could I move to Malta please? :p
You're right, skipping breakfast is really bad, but I'm doing well these days! Unfortunately I don't think your plan would work for me. It takes me 45 min to get into town, so I would really have to eat before leaving. Another thing, I will be working freelance, so I don't have my 'own spot' not even a desk :(
Guess I will have to 'just' get up early ;)
Yeah good question What is keeping me back. I'll work on that, probably its the early waking up for work thing but thats probably an excuse.
I am not a morning person at all. I am always in a rush by the end and always late. I keep on telling myself I'm going to change that habbit but at 8am I always think, "Maybe tommrow."
Hey Stu, how's life?! Oh you sound just like me... Do you think it's a typical goat mentality? 8 AM is that when your alarm goes off but is basically the time when you were supposed to leave the house? :p
Perhaps I should go into hibernation all year long... ;)
Hi! Yes, it is a good office policy right? :) Wow, 45 minutes...I have gotten used to here that the distances are not so big :) everything is close to everything. The problem is the public transport. It can take you about 45 minutes to go to one place when with a car it would take you 20 or 15 minutes.
